Term 1 Week 3
Principal's Message

At whole-school prayers this morning, we had a talk about our school charism and briefly recapped of Mercy Values. We will be unpicking each Value over the next few weeks to reminding ourselves what those values look like in action.
The slideshow we watched is below if anyone is interested.

Immunisation forms Yr 7
Last Friday the year 7's were sent home with an information and consent form for their upcoming Booster and HPV immunisations.
Please complete Section A - if you would like to have your child immunised at school by the immunisation nurse.
Please complete Section B - if you do not wish for them to be immunised at school.
Please return the form signed and completed regardless of your choice, so Health NZ know your decision and will not then follow up with a phone call. If no form is returned, they will follow up with a phone call.
Could the forms please be filled in and returned to school by next Wednesday 26 February.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Birthday Wishes

Special birthday wishes to Eva who turned 9 yesterday, and to Kotoha who will turn 10 this Sunday. We hope you both had/have wonderful, fun filled birthdays.
Missing Polar Fleeces
There are a number of children with missing polar fleeces. Could everyone please check to ensure their child has not accidently brought another child’s fleece home with them, and that all fleeces are clearly named so we can easily identify and return them. Thank you.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.

Room 1 Learning
A busy week in Room 1 last week. We are learning to change activities, by packing away what we have been using and get the correct equipment out ready for the next learning task. Lots of new words to remember - all the different pens ( felt pens, whiteboard markers, sharpies) the different books we use ( for writing, maths work, spelling and handwriting) and where everything goes! We are getting there!
Here are some pictures of us practicing our handwriting by copying words carefully from the whiteboard.
As part of our learning about Waitangi Day, we have been discussing what the word " treaty" means ( an agreement between groups of people). We are going to have a small tent in Room 1 that we can use for some quiet, non- busy time. We are creating a treaty for the tent so we all agree how to use it.

Room 2 Learning
Last week in Room 2, the students were immersed in some exciting hands-on learning! One of our focuses this term is on New Zealand trees and insects. In our Weta study, we've been exploring the fascinating world of these unique insects, learning about their life cycle, habitat, and role in the ecosystem. The children loved watching videos of Weta in the wild and have learned how to draw their own weta.
In Physical Education, we’ve started practicing our basketball skills. From dribbling to shooting hoops, Room 2 has been working hard to improve teamwork and coordination.

Room 4 Learning
Science Box - Microbes and Where To Find Them
Last Wednesday, Room 4 learnt about microbes and identified the 5 groups of microorganisms. The children learnt that microbes (also known as micro-organisms) are a diverse group of tiny, simple life forms. Microbes are too small to be seen by the human eye - they can only be seen under a microscope! Room 4 was split into five groups of three, and each group was given a microbe puzzle to complete representing the five different types of microbes. The five types of microbes are bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and algae. Once each group completed their puzzle, the next step was to use playdough, skewers and pins to create models of their microbe group. Each group was given a poster with pictures of their microbe type. The children presented their models to the class.
