Term 3 week 6
Principal's Message

Strategic Plan
Reading your responses to our strategic plan survey contines to be really helpful. Not only am I getting ideas about how you see us moving forward over the next two years, I already have a list of ifdeas that I have started to action.
Please consider completing the survey if you haven't already done so. I have 13 surveys from 28 families.
Sharing our Cultures
You will see below the amazing experience we had on Friday as part of our Indonesian fortnight. We were also lucky to have the Counihan family and a friend of the Flanagans join us over the past two weeks.
Our next fortnight, starting on Monday 28th will be Malaysian. Starting on 11th September will be Maori fortnight, timed to fit with Maori language week. Please think about how you could share your culture with the children - teach us a song or dance, read us a story, show some photos of your childhood, make some traditional food with a group. Whatever you feel confortable with, a class, whole school or just a small group of children. It is so much better for us to learn from you rather than just researching online.
Covid
As you will know, all retsrictions have been removed by the government. We do ask however, that you continue to monitor your children for covid and other winter illnesses and if they are unwell, keep them at home. That way we can minimise the spread to other children and staff.

Principal

Culture of the Fortnight
On Friday afternoon, Erin and Joseph's Dad, Enrino, ran an Indonesian cultural afternoon for the whole school. Erin shared her Google slide presentation on Indonesia. After that, Enrino ran a quiz on Indonesia with the school in four mixed aged teams. Helped by two of Enrino's friends, the children then played 4 traditional Indonesian games. Enrino also taught the whole school how to play Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star on a traditional Indonesian instrument - the angklung. Each group of children played a specific note and it sounded fantastic! To complete the afternoon some spicy Indonesian food, prepared by mum, Jeane, was shared and it was delicious! A big thank you to Enrino, Erin and Joseph for teaching Room 4 and the rest of the school all about Indonesian culture!

School Admin
Lost Balls
A reminder that our neighbour will return any lost balls on a Friday. Please do not enter the property without permission, particularly now that they have a dog, or knock on their door during the day as one of the ladies works nights.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Room 4: 29 August
Room 1 Learning
In Room 1 we have been focussing on learning and remembering our number facts to 10. We have been using many different materials to help us, tens frames, playing cards, and games such as" Number Island" and" I sea 10!". We have also been doing addition sums in our maths books and we think we are getting pretty good at number facts to 10! You can test us out at home!
We are very excited about the new puzzles we have in Room 1 which are helping us to explore our understandings of 2D and 3D shapes. We are going to try making some 3D shapes from nets ( templates). Watch this space :)
We are enjoying our buddy reading. We buddy read to each other in Room 1 and so far have had one buddy reading session with Room 2. We are looking forward to the next one!

Room 2 Learning
At the beginning of the week, Room 2 hosted Hawaiki for a morning so he could experience what it would be like to be in our class. Hawaiki and Sammy hit it off immediately. We had a good morning of learning about fractions. Just before morning tea the students were told to write down a fraction then stand in order from smallest fraction to largest fraction. Hawaiki joined in like he's been part of the class from the beginning. Good news, Hawaiki started in Room 2 today. Nau mai haere mai, Hawaiki, it's nice to have you in our class.
For Pūtaiao/Science, the students are exploring how simple machines work. This week's lesson was about discovering how positioning a fulcrum affects the energy required to lift the load. We used blocks to experiment with a simple seesaw concept.
On Thursday, for digital technology the students learnt how to create tables, merge cells, colour in shapes, thicken lines and insert images to create Mondrian inspired artwork within a Google Doc. Here are just a few of the finished products.

Room 4 Learning
It was another busy week for Room 4. Our Numeracy focus is 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. On Tuesday the children built 3D models using multi-link cubes. They first built one model from the textbook before designing their own 3D shapes. After building their 3D shapes, it was time to sketch them using isometric dot paper. The children then coloured their designs, which can be seen displayed in Room 4.
While the Yr 7 and 8 children were at Technology in Wednesday's middle block, our Year 5 children came up from Room 2 to join the Year 6s. We started with some Circle Solution introduction activities and then played Game of Awesome. The Year 5s enjoyed their time and we look forward to having them again each Wednesday for the rest of the year.

Congratuations to St Catherine's College who this weekend had teams in all five of the Netball Wellington college finals, taking out 4 of the 5 trophies. Great skills but, most importantly, great sportsmanship on display.
Poetry Evening, Our Lady of Compassion
Join us as we pay tribute to the iconic Aotearoa writer J C Sturm. Poet, short story writer and librarian, Sturm was a pioneer who was one of the first Māori women to graduate with an undergraduate degree. Intimate and expansive, gentle but also unapologetic, Sturm’s poetry is imbued with and reflective of the landscape around her.
