Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
In Science we have been learning about capacity ( the amount something will hold). We've experimented with liquids in containers. and objects in containers. We noticed that the size of the object that we put in a container affects how quickly it will fill up. We described our observations using the words full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty, least and most.
Room 2 Learning
We finished another one of our class books last week! This term we read another novel by the New Zealand author Joy Cowley, called “Chicken Feathers”. After we wrapped up our final novel for the year we wrote our own book reviews. We looked closely at different aspects of the book, including the plot, setting, as well as the cause and effect of the story’s major conflict. The class chose a character from the book to analyse and even drew pictures to illustrate how they felt the character should look. We explored some big themes in novels, such as personality developments and plot structures. Lastly, we rated the book and explained why we chose the rating we did. Great work, Room 2!
Room 4 Learning
On Tuesdays, when the Year 5 children come to Room 4 to work with the Year 6 students, we use a creative story writing resource called Game of Awesome. This card game encourages imaginative story writing by combining various idea and theme cards from four different card packs.
This term, we have taken the activity a step further by having the Year 5 and 6 children create their own story cards and themes. This process has encouraged the children to brainstorm and develop numerous creative story writing ideas. Once the children completed and coloured their story writing cards, they were eager to play Game of Awesome. It was great to see the children use cards to craft stories based on their unique ideas.
