For those that missed the free delivery deadline, you are still able to order photos, but they will now incur a delivery fee.
Birthday Wishes
Happy Birthday to Michael who will turn 6 on Wednesday. We hope you have a wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 2: 04 September
Room 4: 11 September
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
Last week in Science Room 1 explored the 7 colours of the rainbow. The first task was sorting the cards into colour groups, then noticing that within the group there were different " strengths" of colours. We learnt about colour intensity ( our new word!) and then sorted the rainbow color cards according to their intensity. Lots of fun and much discussion around favourite colours!
Room 2 Learning
We've been learning how to create depth perception in artwork. We've reflected back on our learning of measurement for this project and have had a good look at our rulers for some serious measuring. We measured an A4 page in centimeters and had to practise finding precise measurements, including half of 21cm (10.5cm) and equal measurements between each point we measured on our A4 page. This task had us combine both the mathematical and creative sides of our brains. Although frustrating for some of us who'd prefer to jump straight into the creative part of our project, we learned that artists sometimes need to be mathematically precise in order to create certain allusions, such as depth perception.
I'm sure the class is excited to share the end results with you all!
Room 4 Learning
Making 3D Swivel Head Animals Illusions
Last Wednesday Room 4 made 3D Swivel Head Animals. The children could choose from a horse, cat, cow, mouse, dragon, chicken, rabbit, duck, fox, as well as a knight and skeleton. The children cut around their chosen characters and then had to follow a series of tricky folds. At first, this provided a challenge; we had to watch the video a couple of times and regularly check the folding instructions. Once the folds were finished and the tabs sellotaped down, the animal illusion was ready. After completing characters, the children walked past their swivel heads to see the illusion in action. The illusion works if you walk past the characters from a short distance ( 3 to 4 metres) and it looks like their heads are following you as you walk - they are watching you! It really helps the illusion if you concentrate on the characters' eyes as you walk past them.
