Term 3 Week 4
Principal's Message
This evening's meeting is going to be an emotional one. I know that you will all have questions you want to ask and possibly statements you wish to make. I pray for the strength for us all to maintain our values of respect and excellence as we discuss the future of our beautiful school.
We will meet in the hall to listen to Kelly Ross, Vicar for Education and Reuben Norris, general manager of the Archdiocese. Also in attendance will be Jen Carey and Alana McCorry from the Ministry of Education.
Please drop your children in Room 2. They will be supervised by Lucy (Clara's sister) and her friend Brianna (an old student of Mr Small's) and there will be pizza for them.
I will leave the gate open so that you can park on the court.

All orders placed before Midnight on Sunday 18th August will be delivered free to school. (Orders placed after this date will be delivered to your home address, and you will incur a postage fee.)

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Room 4: 14 August 11 September
Birthday Wishes
Happy Birthday to Quinn who turns 10 on Sunday. We hope you have a wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
We are very excited to see how quickly our micro-greens have grown! From tin foil covered dish last week to sprouted and growing!!
For maths we have continued to learn about 100, this time for measurement. We learnt that 100 cm is a metre and used metre rulers outside to measure the court. we worked in groups, sharing and taking turns. Maths outside was fun! We have our 100 wall display up with all our bags of 10 and are practising our skip counting in 10's to 100 ( and backwards too!).
We had fun doing sports last Monday - balloon badminton, floor ball and netball.
Room 2 Learning
We've had a massive week of jam packed learning and fun! We started the week at the Ākau Tangi Sports Centre in Kilbirnie where we all had a go at floorball, netball, and badminton. As these are team sports, we've been learning how to work together in teams, along with developing our own individual skills.
Room 2 has also started some really fun contemporary artwork. This art has had us use a ruler for measuring out a checkered pattern, and oil pastels to outline our unique designs. We then used watercolours to fill in the background. We've experimented with complimentary colours and practised mixing colours to make new colours. Part of our task was to work with different shades of the same colour. I know that Room 2 have been really proud of their artwork and are so excited to share them with everyone at home.
Room 4 Learning
Personal Narrative Writing
For the first two weeks of the term, Room 4 wrote personal narratives about what they did during the holidays or holidays earlier in the year. A personal narrative is when you write about something you have done - recounting the event and what you thought about it. Personal narratives make the author the main character in their own stories.
Here is a selection of writing from Room 4’s personal narratives:
Clara- A Holiday to Australia
On the first day there we drove around a little bit to find a beach. We found one and decided to stay there for the day. The beach had huge waves and was even a bit warm! The best part is that we did not encounter any jellyfish. On the last night we made Aaron a tuna mornay and it was the best! I had finished two bowls before anyone had even finished their first.
Danica - Going Ice Skating
Everyone walked inside and we put our skates on. Clara and I were the first ones to start skating on the ice. Clara was really good at skating while I was getting used to the slippery ice. Once I was used to the ice I was okay but fell over multiple times.
Dara - Going Ice Skating
I enjoyed ice skating because I was able to skate very fast and see other people do tricks. I think you should try ice skating because it is not as hard as you think. If you fall over it is not that cold. Ice skating is a lot of fun and I am sure you would enjoy it if you gave it a go.
Mason - Going to Auckland
We travelled to my Aunt’s house. We watched some videos on a mobile phone. Next we played a game called ‘Days of the Week’. I will tell you how you play the game. You have to be ready to say the days of the week forward and in reverse. There were other games we played like ‘The Quiet Place’ game and ‘Hide and Seek’.
Natalie - Going to Australia
I woke up at 4 am on the last Wednesday morning of Term Two to go to Australia. Mum, Josh and I were going to catch a plane to Brisbane. We were going to spend time in Brisbane with a friend of Mum’s she knew when I was a baby. After that we would fly on to Macky and get picked up by Granny, who had gone over earlier, and Grandad. We arrived at the house and Granny made dinner for us. After dinner we crashed straight into bed.
