Birthday Wishes
Happy Birthday to Bisi, Eza and Abe. Bisi turns 7 on Wednesday, Eza will also turn 7 on Friday, and Abe turns 10 durring the school holidays. We hope you all have wonderful, fun filled birthdays.
Winter Illnesses - Covid
Please be aware that there are a variety of illnesses going around the school at the minute.
Covid is once again doing the rounds. If you or your child have flu-like symptoms please consider testing and staying home until the symptoms disappear. If you or any family member tests positive please let us know, as we have a child in the school who had a past serious reaction which required hospitalisation and the parents would keep them home if necessary.
We are working with the children to remind them of healthy habits. If your child is under the weather the best place for them is a warm bed. Thank you to those parents who have been keeping their sick children home, we appreciate it.
We have plenty of adult and child sized masks if you would like some sent home.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.

Room 2 Learning
Last week Room 2 did some awesome learning around Matariki. We first learned about the Māori creation story of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Afterwards, we looked at the significance of celebrating Matariki in New Zealand. We talked about some of the ways people have celebrated Matariki and some of the ways we could celebrate Matariki today. We then looked at the nine stars of Matariki and read about their names and what they signify. The class were each given one of the nine Matariki stars randomly and had to come up with their own design for that star, based on its name and what it represents.
Have a look at some of our beautiful Matariki star designs, which were shared during our celebration of learning on Thursday.
Room 4 Learning
For the second half of this term, Room 4 has focused on writing their own myths. The myth writing was also a great lead-in to learning about one version of a Maori creation story that links to Matariki. The children had to think carefully about what their myths were explaining or how something (for example, weather or a land feature) was created. Room 4 students have written some excellent myths. Below are snippets from a selection of their myths. The myths will be uploaded onto ClassDojo on Thursday for you to read!
The Legend of the Tiger Apes by Blake
Tane came to challenge Koba to a fight. Koba and the apes all started laughing. Then he used his magic on the apes. Tane pushed his hands forward and threw the curse at them. The tiger apes and Koba were cursed for eternity. They became small, grew tails, and most damaging of all, lost their Intelligence.
How Disease Came Into the World by Clara
Ares thought about the disease that he would send into the mortal world. He finally decided that the disease would make people have headaches, sore throats, coughs a lot and many more horrible things. Ares hadn’t come up with a name for the disease but imagined that the humans would come up with a name. When he sent it into the mortal world, people immediately started to get sick.
The Legend of The Chocolate Hills by Inigo
Artimey and Matatea agreed to stop fighting. They became friends, but because of their injuries, they fell down and disintegrated into hills. Now where their bodies lie are two mountains that have become a tourist attraction in Bohol in the Philippines. The hills were named the Bohol Chocolate Hills. They are called the chocolate hills because they turn into a ‘chocolate brown’ colour in the hot and dry season.
The Beats and Their Gifts by Natalie
Before the world was as it is now there were the beasts. The beasts were the creators of the world. Each beast was given something they were to call their one gift to care for. The griffins were given the air and the clouds. They were to protect the birds that fly in the air and to control the weather. The dragons forfeited their wings and went to live in the sea. There they cared for the fish and the sea plants. The unicorns were given the land. They protected the animals and the plants. How Lightning Was Created by Joan
The animals gathered around the trap and saw the yeti melt and burn. It was so bright that the lava shone around their bodies. Then the trap caused a huge explosion that harmed the animals' eyes and sent rays of bright light racing across the sky. From that day on the animals did not have to worry and let their cubs, kids and pups play in the leafy jungle. This is how lightning was created.
