Term 2 Week 8
Principal's Message
Oh my goodness, this term is flying by!
Next Thursday at 2pm, we will be holding out Celebration of Learning. If you can't attend feel free to send along other whanau members or friends.
From Wednesday to Friday this week I will be attending the Catholic Convention. Principals, DRSs and other people involved in Catholic education will be gathering to listen to some inspiring speakers. I'll let you know what I heard next week.
Manaakitanga
I have been so proud of our children and how they have been showing our value of manaakitanga - hospitality. We have had some new children joining St Bernard's and others coming for visits. The children have been so welcoming and friendly towards them, helping them to settle in smoothly.

Welcome to St Bernard's School
A big St Bernard’s welcome to the Ombler Vrey family who have joined us this week. Today Nicky started in Room 2, and tomorrow we welcome his sister Amelia, who will be in Room 1.
Welcome to school Nicky & Amelia!
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 2: 19 June
Winter Illnesses - Covid
Please be aware that there are a variety of illnesses going around the school at the minute.
Covid is once again doing the rounds. If you or your child have flu-like symptoms please consider testing and staying home until the symptoms disappear. If you or any family member tests positive please let us know, as we have a child in the school who had a past serious reaction which required hospitalisation and the parents would keep them home if necessary.
We are working with the children to remind them of healthy habits. If your child is under the weather the best place for them is a warm bed. Thank you to those parents who have been keeping their sick children home, we appreciate it.
We have plenty of adult and child sized masks if you would like some sent home.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
For our maths learning, we have been talking and learning about fractions and exploring how to cut shapes into halves and quarters, and more challenging, into thirds and eighths. We have also been using materials to make sets of objects and then share them equally between 2,3, or 4 people. We have also used equipment to make patterns.
Room 2 Learning
Last week we worked on some awesome science projects. This term our science focus has been on human bones and anatomy, therefore we've each chosen one of three different anatomy projects to complete. We've been busy measuring, cutting, drawing, labelling, and glueing. After all of our hard work, we're finally starting to put the last parts of our projects together! We are looking forward to sharing these with everyone at our celebration of learning next week!
Room 4 Learning
Last week for our science session, Room 4 examined and analysed water samples taken from various ecosystems across the greater Wellington Region. The purpose of analysing the water samples was to identify the environmental DNA (eDNA) of animals and plants in each ecosanctuary. The children worked in pairs and looked for any invasive species in their eDNA samples. Invasive species refer to introduced animals that are not native to New Zealand and are considered pests that cause significant harm to our native birds, such as the kiwi. One of the primary invasive animals in New Zealand is the stoat.
Each pair poured their eDNA water samples through special filter paper and a plastic funnel into a beaker. Each water sample contained glitter, with different colours of glitter representing the eDNA of plants or animals. The children used magnifying glasses to observe the colours of the eDNA (glitter). They then matched these colours with a chart showing the eDNA colours associated with specific animals or plants.
