Term 2 Week 7
Principal's Message
On Friday, I read a book to Room 1 called, 'Why Johnny Doesn't Flap: NT is Ok!'. The book is written from the prspective a child who has autism and is friends with a boy who is NT (neurotypical).
After reading the book, we talked about how we are all different and that different isn't wrong, different is just different. We looked at our strengths and things we find tricky and we talked about how we might look different than our friends but might have the same needs, fears and interests.
Our school values help our students learn to:
* treat everyone with respect regardless of their needs
* to show compassion to those who may find things trickier or more upsetting than we do
* to exercise social justice by allowing everyone to join in their games
* show hospitality by welcoming all new comers regardless of whether they are the same or different to us
* show service by helping those who may need a little bit more help
* show excellence by being the best version of Jesus we can be.

Winter Illnesses - Covid
Please be aware that there are a variety of illnesses going around the school at the minute.
Covid is once again doing the rounds. If you or your child have flu-like symptoms please consider testing and staying home until the symptoms disappear. If you or any family member tests positive please let us know, as we have a child in the school who had a past serious reaction which required hospitalisation and the parents would keep them home if necessary.
We are working with the children to remind them of healthy habits. If your child is under the weather the best place for them is a warm bed. Thank you to those parents who have been keeping their sick children home, we appreciate it.
We have plenty of adult and child sized masks if you would like some sent home.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 12 June
Room 2: 19 June
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
For our maths learning in Room 1 last week, we focussed on working with different buddies each day to complete a variety of maths activities and challenges.
We have been learning about fractions. On Wednesday, we worked as small groups of 3 to complete a task. We took turns to read a little reader about halves and quarters, then had a worksheet to fill out to show our understanding.
We helped each other in our groups and everyone completed the mahi (work).
Good job Room 1!
Room 2 Learning
Last week, Room 2 was busy doing lots of creative writing. We have been analysing how authors portray different characters. From the book I have been reading to the class, we looked closely at each of the different characters and how we might perceive their personalities through the author's descriptive clues. In doing so, we've been learning about the difference between 'telling and showing' in creative writing. The class have been recognising and practising ways in which they can show a character's personality traits, rather than just telling them to the reader. This is also one way in which the class can begin to understand how to inference meaning from texts.
Here are some fun snapshots from our outdoor activities last week:
Room 4 Learning
Last week, Room 4's Religious Education sessions focused on statements that reminded people how to bring about the reign of God on Earth - Te Tino Rangatiratanga. The children discussed statements like, 'Repent: For the Kingdom of God is at Hand' and 'The Kingdom of God is Within You' and then designed some statements. Read the statements by four of the Room 4 children about bringing the reign of God on Earth - Te Tino Rangatiratanga. (Vincent, Dara, Clara, Blake)
