Term 2 Week 6
Principal's Message
Winter Illnesses
Please be aware that there are a variety of illnesses going around the school at the minute.
Covid is once again doing the rounds. If you or your child have flu-like symptoms please consider testing and staying home until the symptoms disappear. If you or any family member tests positive please let us know, as we have a child in the school who had a past serious reaction which required hospitalisation and the parents would keep them home if necessary.
We are working with the children to remind them of healthy habits. If your child is under the weather the best place for them is a warm bed. Thank you to those parents who have been keeping their sick children home, we appreciate it.
We have plenty of adult and child sized masks if you would like some sent home.
Teacher Only Day
On Friday morning we joined staff from St Anne's and St Francis de Sales from with a focus on neurodiversity. We learnt how cognitive assessments are carried out and how to read them to get the best for children in our classes. Then we heard from two RTLBs (Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour) about dyslexia and the science of reading. We have come away with some ideas that we will use to adapt our programmes straight away. In the afternoon we headed back to school to work on resources.
Celebration of Learning
Please note that this has been changed to Thursday 27th of June at 2pm.

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Birthday Wishes
Happy Birthday to Wallace who turns 7 on Friday. We hope you have wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
Room 1 enjoyed their dress up day on Thursday.
This morning Mrs Small had some visitors in her office. Four lovely children came to share their amazing diaries of their long weekend adventures and were given a gold award for them.
Room 2 Learning
Room 2 has been busy learning about statistics this week. We've looked at different types of graphs and started to identify the difference between them. The class has been learning about what the word 'data' means and how this relates to statistics. We've been reading different graphs and recognising how different data is represented on different graphs.
We are also learning to understand what the mean is, as well as how and when to find the mean. We then had a go at making our own bar graphs! We decided to choose sports as our topic and we counted the number of sports each of us enjoyed/played. We then found the average (mean) number of sports the class enjoys/plays.
Have a look at some of our awesome work!
Room 4 Learning
Investigating DNA
Last Wednesday, Room 4 investigated DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). In pairs, the children made a DNA strip using 4 different coloured magnets. The four colours represented the DNA bases - adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. Once the children had made a single strand base sequence of DNA, they had to find the matching double base sequence card. Next, they used more magnets to make the sequence of the double base card. The children had to check that the bases matched, adenine matched with thymine and cytosine with guanine. Finally, they had to make a 3D model of their double base DNA strand. The children worked efficiently to match their DNA bases to create a 3D DNA model and twisted it to show the double helix DNA shape.
