Skool Loop - Now Data Free
Skool Loop is excited to announce that it has aligned with Zero. This means Skool Loop can now be accessed on your chosen device for free.
Please see the below diagram on how to switch over to the free data.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 15 May 12 June
Room 2: 29 May 19 June
Room 4: 05 June
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
We continued with our statistics learning with Mrs Harper by doing a statistical investigation. We took off our shoes and ordered them into different groups. We used tally marks to help us count and learnt how to make a group of five. We counted 17 pairs of shoes, which means 34 shoes. We were wearing our sports shoes so we could sort them into different colours. Black was was the most common shoe colour although pink and purple were popular colours too. 9 children wear size 12 shoes. The smallest shoe size was a child size 9 and the biggest shoe size was a size 3 youth. We discovered most children have laces on their shoes, but often they also have velcro straps to do the shoes up.
Room 2 Learning
This week we learned about Korea in our cultural fortnight. Jacob taught the class a Korean game, which included some fun craft making. We have also been working on some creative writing and the class have been enjoying publishing their writing on a google doc. The class had their first session of basketball training on Friday. For science we’ve been learning about venn diagrams by comparing the differences and similarities between fish and whales.

Country and Culture Research
Our country and culture of the fortnight was South Korea. Room 4 worked in small groups and pairs to research and find out lots of information about South Korea. Here are some of the amazing facts they have found out:
Riley, Inigo and Blake: Geographical Location
South Korea has a border with North Korea. It’s in the Northern Hemisphere. South Korea is surrounded by the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The countries that border South Korea are North Korea, Russia and China. South Korea’s capital city is Seoul.
Mason and Dara: Religion
In South Korea the following faiths are practised. 17% of the population is Buddhist, 16% is Protestant, 6% is Catholic, and other religions are 1% of the population. 50% of the population does not practice a religion.
Natalie, Alna and Joshua: Language
South Korea’s main language is Korean. Here are several phrases:
Annyeonghaseyo = Hello
Gamsahabnida = Thank you
Nae ileum-eun = My name is
The Korean alphabet is called Hangul.
Hangul has 14 consonants and 10 vowels with a total of 24 letters.
Vincent, Sam and Quest: Car Companies
Surprisingly for a small country, South Korea has two well known car companies: Hyundai and Kia (both based in Seoul). It also has some obscure ones, such as Proto Motors (closed 2017) and Genesis (luxury division of Hyundai). Kia cars not only look good, but they are safe too, with FCA (forward collision avoidance), TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system), VSM (vehicle stability monitoring) and ESS (emergency stop signal).
Clara, Danica, Erin and Joan: K-Pop
K-pop is very popular in South Korea. Over 100 groups have debuted in South Korea each year, less than 5% are successful. The most popular groups are Blackpink, Twice, BTS and Stray Kids. You may have heard some K-pop songs and have not realised it’s K-pop, such as: Cupid by Fifty Fifty, and Super Shy by Newjeans.
Clara, Danica, Erin and Joan: Food
South Korea has delicious foods. Some of the most well known ones are kimchi, bibimbap, red rice cakes, bulgogi, Korean stew, jajangmyeon, samgyeopsal and Korean chicken. One of the most popular foods in South Korea is kimchi.
