Term 2 Week 2
Principal's Message
At whole-school prayers this morning, we looked at our value of Service - Ratonga. The children were encouraged to think about how, who and where they can serve others. We also talked about the best way to serve is without the need for praise or being asked to do so.
When the children show the Mercy Values during the school day they are rewarded with a Value card which is placed in a box for their house team. If you feel strongly that they are showing one of our values at home, I'd love to hear about it and present them with a card.
Attendance Dues
This is a message from the Catholic Attendance Dues team.
The Archdiocese of Wellington attendance dues team are in the process of sending out school fee notices, but due to the implementation of a new software system (CathConnect), some may experience a delay or inaccuracies. We appreciate your patience as the team works diligently to distribute all statements and address your inquiries promptly. Thank you for your understanding during this transition.

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 15 May 12 June
Room 2: 29 May 19 June
Room 4: 08 May 05 June
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
At the end of last term, Room 1 invited their teddy (or toy) to school for the day and to have a picnic. The teddies and toys joined in with fitness, played on the playground, were read stories by their person, and ALL of Room 1 had a fun and fantastic day!
The first week this term has been settling back into the routines and habits of the classroom, and re-connecting with each other. As part of our NZ Histories curriculum, we had a focus on ANZAC Day, what it means, what is a remembrance service, and why the poppy is significant. Check out our "poppies in the field " art on the Room 1 windows. Some students also got to bake ANZAC biscuits with Mrs Harper and shared them with the rest of us! Yummy
Room 2 Learning
Room two has started the new term by learning about ANZAC day. Here we looked at some new vocabulary around the topic of ANZAC day, as well as exploring the meaning behind the phrase "Lest We Forget." Later, we looked at what the poppy symbolizes and how it came to be used as a sign of remembrance for ANZAC day. We also completed some beautiful artwork of poppies using pastels. For math we have been revising our knowledge of measurement and doing some practice converting different units of measurement. This included some new learning around measuring capacity and volume.
Room 4 Learning
Origami Heart Activity
It was a busy start to the term with Room 4 settling back into their learning routines in numeracy, reading and writing. Our inquiry topic this term is Healthy Minds and Healthy Bodies where the children are learning information about the human body and hauora (well being). On Friday, the Year 6 children made origami hearts. They watched a video clip and followed step by step to make origami heart designs. Below are some pictures of the Year 6s making their origami hearts.
We love to hear what the children are up to outside of school. Feel free to send in photos of their experiences.
This weekend, for the first time, Riley competed in Speedcubing New Zealand in Palmerston North last Saturday, participated in by more than 50 people. He achieved his personal best of 21 seconds for 3x3x3. He will need to practise more to qualify for the finals, below 20 seconds.
