Term 1 Week 9
Principal's Message
Learning Conferences
As I mentioned last week, on the 8th and 9th of April we will be holding Learning Conferences. This is an opportunity for your children to share their reading, writing and mathematics goals with you.
Each conferences will last for 10 minutes. If you have more than one child, please leave a gap between each meeting so that timings can run smoothly. The library will be available for siblings to wait while you spend time with your child.
Appointments need to be made on the school app. Bookings will be available from 3.15pm today. If you have trouble using the app please let me know and I can book an appointment from my end.
Holy Week
This Thirsday at 9am we will be holding a Holy Week liturgy. The children will be performing the drama pieces they have been working on with Mrs Harper this term. It would be lovely for families to join us.

Easter Break Dates

We wish you all a wonderful Easter.
Missing Cold Packs
Please help! We have a large number of our cold packs/wheat bags missing in action, we currently only have one for the entire school.
We use these frequently for children when they are hurt or feeling unwell so are invaluable. Could you please check to see if any have been brought home with your child when they have been hurt or unwell and urgently return them to school.
Thank you.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
Last week Mrs Williams was in Room 1 again, and brought a big book to share with the children "Where's my Teddy" about a boy and a bear who had both lost their teddies. Much discussion was had about teddy bears, and a list of adjectives was made of all the words Room 1 could think of to describe their teddy bear, or any teddy bear! They then did some exciting art...painting with forks!! to create a teddy bear face and a short descriptive sentence about their bear. We are thinking about having a teddy bear's picnic near the end of the term, so watch out for an invitation for Teddy ( or another soft toy) to come to school!
Room 1 had a lovely visit to Brooklyn Library on Wednesday afternoon with Mrs Small and chose some picture books for our classroom for the next couple of weeks.
We are keeping a close eye on our Sea Monkeys ( with a magnifying glass!) and have been keeping track of water temperature and adding air and food as per the schedule. We hope to see something interesting in the jar soon...
Our Friday maths with Mrs Harper has been all about measurement using the story of the Gingerbread Man.
We have measured clothes for our Gingerbread men, sorted them in order from tallest to smallest and of course measured ingredients and MADE Gingerbread Men YUM YUM!
Here is our Gingerbread Man display.
Room 2 Learning
This week Room 2 have been drawing diagrams for their reports. We have been learning about diagrams and why they are important. After looking at examples we carefully practiced drawing our own diagrams. Room 2 had the choice of colouring their diagrams if they wanted to. Some of us have chosen to shade our sea creatures using only pencil, while others coloured them according to their natural colours. Have a look at some of our beautiful work!
For maths we have started to apply our knowledge of tenths and hundredths to real-life examples. Some of us are looking at measurement, while others are continuing to use money as an example of tenths and hundreds.
Room 4 Learning
Last Wednesday, Room 4 completed a Magnetic Madness investigation. The investigation was about testing the magnetic force of three different sized magnets. The children were in pairs and used paper clips to test the magnetic force of each magnet - a small sized, medium sized and large horseshoe magnet. For the first test the children attached paper clips in a chain to each magnet. The aim was to make the chain as long as possible before one paper clip dropped off. We discussed the results of which magnet could make the longest chain and why one magnet soon drops from the chain. This is because once a paper clip is attached to the magnet it gains some magnetic charge. The charge starts reducing the further away the clip is from the magnet.
The second test was to see how many paper clips each magnet could pick up in one go. The third activity was to use the large horseshoe magnet to move a magnet tied and sellotaped to the desk. The aim was to get the magnet close to the paper clip but not touch it. This required patience and skillful maneuvering of the magnet. Riley was able to do it really well!
