Term 1 Week 8
Principal's Message
Holy Week
Next Thursday morning at 9am we will be holding a Holy Week liturgy. The children will lead us through Holy Week using some of the drama they have been learning with Mrs Harper this term. It would be lovely of family members could join us.
Learning Conferences
It is hard to believe that we are already at the start of week 8 of the term. We were due to hold our learning conferences next week but we have decided as a staff that we will postpone them until the start of Week 11, Monday the 8th and Tuesday the 9th of April. Bookings will be made through the school app and I will let you know when they are ready to be made. In the meantime please make sure you have downloaded the app.

Welcome to St Bernard's School
Today Van Lian started school in Room 1. We are delighted to welcome Van Lian and his family to St Bernard’s.
School Accounts
Accounts were emailed out to families last week. Thank you to those who have paid already.
If there are any issues with the details on your account, you did not receive one, or you would prefer a hard copy please contact Katrina at the school office. Accounts can be paid by cheque, cash or online into the school account (we encourage online banking if this is convenient). The school bank account details are at the bottom of the invoice. Many families arrange an automatic payment to ease the financial pressure.
Remember that donations can be claimed as a tax deduction.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 20 March
Room 2: 27 March
Room 4: 03 April
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Birthday Wishes
Happy Birthday to Lea who turns 8 on Wednesday. We hope you have wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Room 1 Learning
Our focus for maths at the moment is counting, writing numbers (as big as we can go!) and working together with a buddy when doing a maths activity. We still LOVE the game BUZZ, and have been playing it by counting backwards from 10, and 20.
In PE we are improving our small ball skills and are getting more accurate throwing at a target ( the cricket stumps)
Science with Mrs Harper on Friday was very exciting!!! We have Sea Monkeys (briny shrimps) in a jar in our room to look after. They are so small we need a magnifying glass to see them. We are going to look after them and watch them grow.
Room 2 Learning
This week, Room 2 have been working really hard on their report writing. We have been busy editing our draft reports and then rewriting them in preparation for publishing our final edit. We are focusing particularly on how to correctly structure our writing into paragraphs, by organising our writing into topics. We have also been learning about the purpose and importance of an effective introduction.
For maths, we've been learning about tenths and hundredths. In these pictures we're using pretend money to help us understand tenths and hundredths.
Room 4 Learning
Science Box Activity - Fishy Business
Last Wednesday, Room 4 worked on another amazing Science Box activity. The activity was called Fishy Business and focused on different ways of catching fish. The children worked in pairs, each pair using two spoons, a stopwatch and a container of counters representing a different species of fish. The purpose of the activity was to try different ways of ‘catching fish’. The different ways represented how fish are caught recreationally and commercially.
The first fishing method was for one of the children to use one spoon to scoop out fish while their partner timed them. This was a lot of fun and also saw water being spread onto newspaper covered desks! This was followed by both children scooping out counters using two spoons while being timed. This method proved more efficient than the one spoon scooping method (with the exception of one pair).
The final and quickest method involved both children grabbing handfuls of counters out of the water. This was showing the way deep sea trawling works. The other two methods, one spoon and two spoon fishing, represented recreational fishing and other methods apart from deep sea trawling of fishing stocks. The children enjoyed being able to time each other and explore different fishing methods.
