Term 1 Week 6
Principal's Message
Parish Children's Mass
Thank you to those children who joined us at the Parish Children's Mass on Sunday. It was a lovely opportunity for the three parish schools to come together. Natalia, Cosima, Leo and Riley represented us well.
We congratulate Imara and Inigo who began their journey on the sacramental programme. Please keep them in your prayers as they move through the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
Marine Education
The Wellington weather tried its best but it couldn't stop the fun we had last Wednesday on our trip to the Marine Education Centre in Island Bay. Dr Victor gave us some great information and showed us how to hold the sea creatures in the touch pool properly. Thank you to Kate, Veronica and Nik for joining us, we couldn't do it without parent support.

Principal

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 20 March
Room 2: 06 March 27 March
Room 4: 13 March 03 April
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
In preparation for our trip last week to the Marine Education Centre, we were discussing all the living things that we knew lived in the sea. We then drew a picture to show our knowledge, starting with the ocean floor, working our way up to the surface of the sea. Aren't our pictures cute! We had lots of questions about where some creatures lived and what they eat, so that will be our investigation for Sea Week this week.
For Lent, we are focussing on how we can live more like Jesus by being extra kind, loving, caring and helpful. We have a Lent Kindness Jar on the prayer table and each day the "helping hand" student pulls out a card that has a suggestion for something we could do that day.
Room 2 Learning
This week, Room 2 has been learning about the ocean. This has included learning about different ocean habitats (layers of the ocean), sea creatures, along with the environmental impact we have on the ocean. We visited the Marine Education Centre at Island Bay. Here we closely encountered some of Wellington's incredible sea life! Later we had some fun on the playground - unfortunately the weather wasn't suitable for our planned beach cleanup.
Room 4 Learning
Robot Dreams - Short Story Writing
The Year 8 children have been reading the short story 'Robot Dreams' as part of their novel study programme. This is a science fiction story by Isaac Asimov - the famous science fiction writer. They have created their own short stories about a scenario based on Robot Dreams. The scenario was:
A robot made to cook and clean stops doing what its master tells it to.
Natalie and Vincent’s first part of their short stories are shared below. They continue to work on their stories and we look forward to how their stories will end. Watch this space…
Natalie’s story so far:
I sprint down the street, the scene flashing through my head. A robot just killed my neighbour! There is a robot revolution going on! Why didn't anybody tell me?! I’ll ask RBF and RP4. Wait! They’re robots too, what if they're in the revolution? Too late.
I run through the doorway and immediately trip over the door on the floor. Standing up, I looked down. The front door was lying on the floor. I stepped through another smashed door into the kitchen, I looked around. There, under the sink, was RBF. I watched him nervously.
“Are they gone?” he asked.
“Who?”
“The robots, they tried to force me to join a revelation.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“The laws are removed from my system, but remember when your father rewrote my code I had instincts and they overran all of my other coding. My instincts are telling me to do as you say.”
“Wow,” I said. My mind was spinning.
“Wait! What about RP4?” I cried.
“She ran off,” he said.
“We should find her, she doesn't know how to protect herself!”
Vincent’s story so far:
“Human?” said Proto. “Yes Proto?” Alex yelled from a different room. “I have decided to enquire about the job you have given me”.
“What is it?” Alex mumbled with a mouthful of chips.
“I shall no longer obey your given orders to me” said Proto.
“Excuse me!? ” Alex shouted “According to the umm second law, you are NOT allowed to disobey me or something… I don't know”.
Proto replied, “As you humans say: I don’t care, so I suppose I shall stand idle because I am no longer your so-called ‘robo-servant’. ”
Alex angrily stomped over to the kitchen where the idle robot had resided and shouted ” Don’t make me deacti-” he had stopped in his tracks because he had noticed that Proto was nowhere to be seen.
Alex started to worry about where his fifty thousand dollar investment wandered off to. He decided to use the app on his phone only to realise that his phone was also missing which had disabled the function to deactivate Proto. Due to the urgency of this situation, Alex decided that it was best to take a breather outside, away from all the electronics that Proto could control.
As soon as Alex stepped outside he heard screaming down the road. When he looked he saw Proto attacking a cat with a broken glass bottle with the owner shouting at the armed robot. He yelled, “Proto come back this instant!” Proto stared at its owner for a split second before continuing to beat up the helpless cat. Alex started to run over to Proto until he was stopped by a wall of police drones equipped with tasers all repeating, ”You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law.”
