Mercy Values
At Monday morning prayers for the rest of this term, we will be unpicking each of our school values. Today we started looking at the value of Respect-Whakarangatira.
We talked about showing:
*respect for others in the way we speak to and treat them.
*respect for the Church- joining in respectfully and the use of God's name.
*respect for ourselves- our bodies and the way we project ourselves.
*respect for school- the grounds, our classrooms, our uniform.

Welcome to St Bernard's School
We are delighted to welcome Isabella, who has joined her big brother Quinn here at St Bernard's. We hope she had a great start to school.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Board News
New Presiding Member
Congratulation to Brendon McLean (Quinn and Isabella's dad) who has been elected as the presiding member (chairperson) of our Board for 2024.
Thank to Craig Evans who has been in the role for the past two years and has been a great support for Lisa and the school. He continues to be a member of the Board.
Our school has a Board of Trustees that govern our school. Our school Board is made up of the principal, three proprietor's representatives, 4 elected parent representatives and a teacher representative. We have recently had representatives step down from their positions.
We are looking for one parent representatives and two proprietor's representatives to join the Board. Here is some information about what a representative does:
*We hold two evening meetings per term that run from 7pm until 8.30/9pm.
*Prior to the meeting their will be a principal's report and other documents to read (none of which are very long).
*There is the opportunity to attend Zoom Board professional development.
*You will be involved in the governance of the school, ensuring we are meeting Ministry requirements, hearing about teaching and learning, monitoring the budget, supporting and monitoring our strategic plan.
*Board members are entitled to $55 per meeting. This can be claimed or donated to the school.
Proprietor's representatives must be Catholic and will need to put an application into the archdiocese.
If we have more than one person interested in being a parent representative we will need to hold an election. If there is ony one person there is no need.
If you have any quesions please speak to Mrs Small.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
We have had a busy week!
We are settling into the class timetable and getting used to the routines of the school day. All very new for our New Entrant children who have just started school, but the Y1 and Y2 children are showing the Mercy values of Aroha (love and compassion) and Maanikitanga (hospitality) and helping them along.
We read together the big book "Bubbles" and then had fun outside blowing bubbles and wrote about where they went.
In maths we learnt a number counting game called "Buzz". They can teach it to you at home. There are many versions. We have started with counting in ones forwards and backwards to 10.
Friday's science with Mrs Harper was exploring floating and sinking using the Float My Boat House of Science Kit.
Room 2 Learning
This week room two has been working exceptionally hard on their PATs. They have completed four different tests, each around 40 minutes long. I have been very impressed by their concentration and enthusiasm for these tests. Ka pai room two! You all deserve a relaxing weekend.
We have also finished our computer contracts and set up our online learning programs. This has been something that room two have been really looking forward to and it's been fun to observe their excitement for the new school year.
On Thursday room two met my new pet chickens, Crumb, Lavender, and Eden. Crumb was a particular star with the class and I'm sure she enjoyed the cuddles and admiration she received. It was a lovely way to end our testing for the day and I'm sure the chickens will have to pay another visit soon!
Room 4 Learning
Intermediate Programme and Rotary Blade Design and Testing
On Friday afternoon Year 7 and 8 started their intermediate programme. Natalie, Alna, Clara, Erin and Danica are baking and cooking with Mrs Harper. Riley and Mason are designing and making structures using a range of materials. Vincent, Sam and Logan are working on an electronic design project. So where did this leave the Year 6s?
The Year 6s worked on a rotary blade design activity - using a paper template and paper clips. The template was cut and folded to make two blades and a body - a model of a rotary wing. When the rotary wing was dropped, the blades would start to spin the same way helicopter blades spin. Year 6 made an A4 sized paper model template to test first. Next, they changed the size of the template and used coloured paper and cardboard as variations of the template.
The best part was testing the rotary blade templates. This involved standing at the Room 3 balcony and dropping the blades to see how well they would spin and fly. After the first round of testing, it was time to add a paper clip and try out other ideas like joining two sets of blades together. It was out to the balcony again to test their modified designs! It was a great way to spend a Friday afternoon and there will be another scientific-technology design activity for Year 6 to complete next week!
