Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Message

Uniform
As you know we are a uniformed school and when you enrol at the school you are agreeing to uphold our uniform policy. There are certain items that are starting to move away from the policy.
Below are examples of acceptable forms of footwear. Please note that shoes and sandals must be black leather or leather look with a black sole. Sports shoes, fabric shoes or symbols of another colour are not allowed. Please ensure that in future all school footwear purchases follow the policy.
School socks are navy blue. These must also be worn with PE gear.
Hair accessories must be navy blue, black or burgundy (the colour in the girls uniform). Acceptable items are hair ties, headbands, clips, scrunchies and ribbons.
Children may wear a black, long sleeved thermal under their uniform. Blue thermals are not part of the uniform policy.
Thank you for your support with this.
Lisa Small,
Principal

Lost Balls
A reminder that our neighbour will return any lost balls on a Friday. Please do not enter the property without permission, particularly now that they have a dog, or knock on their door during the day as one of the ladies works nights.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Basketball Coaching
This term, our PE sessions will have a basketball focus, coached by Capital Basketball. Please ensure your child wears their PE uniform and sports shoes every Friday.
Room 1 Learning
Last week room 1 listened to a variety of stories about Matariki and were inspired by the Seven Kites of Matariki story to create kites using pastels.
We read the Big book Number 10 Tawai Crescent which is all about whanau and so we have begun learning our Mihi, how to introduce ourselves and our family in Te Reo.
Our maths was all about shapes!! We have been learning the names of 2D shapes and talking about corners and sides. We are looking all around the environment to see what shapes we can spy. We will be looking at home too!

Room 2 Learning
Room 2 was a buzz of connectivity all week. The students loved catching up with each other after the holidays. They had a busy first week of Term 3. For reading we enjoyed a Matariki themed novel, "Scoop and Scribe Search for the Seven Stars of Matariki". As a follow up task the students learnt how to write captions for their illustrations of events within the chapters. For literacy the students have written about Matariki and are publishing their stories on a poster. They have been sewing stars on hessian to complete their posters. Three finished posters are displayed on our classroom wall. I look forward to sharing more of their posters in next week's newsletter.

Room 4 Learning
This week, Room 4 created manu tukutuku paper kite designs. This activity involved paper weaving and lots of colouring. The children had to weave the dyed A3 paper to create a chess-like cross stitch backing for their paper kite bodies. Feathers were also added to complete the manu tukutuku designs. The designs look fantastic and will be displayed in the school hall. If you have a spare moment after school this week pop into the hall and see Room 4's magnificent designs. Below is some information about manu tukutuku kites.
“The Māori kite is known as manu tukutuku or manu aute. Manu means both kite and bird, and the word tukutuku refers to the winding out of the line as the kite ascends. Kites were also known as pākau, a name for the wing of a bird. Kites were flown to celebrate the start of the Māori New Year when Matariki appeared in the mid-winter night sky.”

Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday to Dara who turns 10 this Saturday. We hope you have a wonderful, fun filled birthday.

Bishops urge all Catholics to study Synod’s working document Instrumentum laboris
All Catholics are being urged to read the working document that will guide the Synod meeting in Rome in October and help to set the future direction of the Church. Bishop of Auckland Stephen Lowe, President of the NZ Catholic Bishops Conference, says the Instrumentum laboris (Working Document) published by the Synod Secretariat is another step towards the future, not its final word. “This working document is the product of the process of the Church listening to and hearing what the People of God have said during the parish, diocesan, national and continental stages of the Synod process that Catholics here and around the world have been part of,” says Bishop Steve. “It is a document that reflects the Holy Spirit speaking to people throughout the world. As such it is a document for the whole Church, and I invite everyone to prayerfully read and reflect on it, and to pray for the Synod's work over the next 18 months.”
