Term 1 Week 2
Principal's Message
Welcome back for the start of the 2024 school year. I hope you all had a lovely summer.
We had my mum and dad with us for the whole of January and so I feel truly rejuvenated. We had a lovely time together, particularly enjoying a week in Christchurch. We've played lots of mini golf (my winning round shown below), done some escape rooms, fed giraffes and visited the Antartica Centre to name just a few activities. Our cat certainly made the most of the extra attention and people to feed him!
It was lovely to hear the children's summer stories last week. I really enjoyed welcoming all our new students and their familes and look forward to getting to know them.
Hall Map Display
I am currently updating our hall display which shows where our families come from. If you have yet to supply me with a photograph please do this week. Any families who have new additions since you last supplied a photograph feel free to send in an updated version.

Out of School Activities
We love to hear about what the children have been up to out of school. We find that the more we know about them the better the relationship we have with them. If you take photos of activities please send them to Mrs Small with a short explanation.
Quest played his first game of the new year for Miramar under 11s this past Saturday at the Miramar Polo Grounds. It was a thrilling match against Johnsonville Hawkes, and despite the close score of 10-11, with Johnsonville Hawkes clinching victory by just one run, it was an exhilarating experience for Quest.
What made it even more special was having Quest's Dad and Mr. Small there to cheer him on. Their support meant the world to Quest, and it truly added to the magic of the game.
Quest's passion for softball shines through in every match, and it's incredible to see him continue to grow and excel in this area of sport.
Board News
Our school has a Board of Trustees that govern our school. Our school Board is made up of the principal, three proprietor's representatives, 4 elected parent representatives and a teacher representative. We have recently had representatives step down from their positions.
We are looking for two parent representatives and two proprietor's representatives to join the Board. Here is some information about what a representative does:
*We hold two evening meetings per term that run from 7pm until 8.30/9pm.
*Prior to the meeting their will be a principal's report and other documents to read (none of which are very long).
*There is the opportunity to attend Zoom Board professional development.
*You will be involved in the governance of the school, ensuring we are meeting Ministry requirements, hearing about teaching and learning, monitoring the budget, supporting and monitoring our strategic plan.
*Board members are entitled to $55 per meeting. This can be claimed or donated to the school.
Proprietor's representatives must be Catholic and will need to put an application into the archdiocese.
If we have more than one person interested in being a parent representative we will need to hold an election. If there is ony one person there is no need.
If you have any quesions please speak to Mrs Small.
Welcome to St Bernard's School
A big St Bernard’s welcome to Leo, Natalia, Ishaan, and their families.
They all started school last week, in Room 1. We hope they had a great start to school.
2024 Stationery Lists
2024 Stationery Lists
Stationery lists were given to all children last term, copies are also available on the school website, and are attached below. We ask that all children return to school with their full stationery order.
The tissues you are asked to supply are made available in classrooms. This helps to reduce the risk of infections from children not using handkerchiefs. Please supply a large box of tissues.
A note from teachers: If your child still has room in their books from this year, we are happy for them to use the rest of the pages at the start of 2024.
Sun Hats
A reminder we are a sun smart school, so all children must have a school sunhat at school each day in Term 1 regardless of the weather.
Class Dojo
Class Dojo connects our students and whānau with classroom teachers as we work together in partnership to build amazing learning communities.
Students can showcase and share their learning from both home and school by adding photos and videos to their own portfolios. Parents can comment, share photos or videos and connect with their child’s teacher.
You can use it on any device: it’s a simple, free mobile app for iOS and Android, and can also be accessed from your computer at classdojo.com. The site and app are safe and secure for your child to use. Only your child and their teachers can see the work, photos or videos that they upload in their portfolio.
Your child’s teacher will be sending you a link via email inviting you to join for the current school year.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 21 February 20 March
Room 2: 06 March 27 March
Room 4: 13 March 03 April
