Term 3 Week 8
Principal's Message

First Communion
Yesterday, Mr Small and I were lucky to be able to join Marco and Hawaiki as they made their First Communion at St Anne's Chucrh. Such a special occasion as the boys completed the last of the Sacraments of Initiation.
Attendance Dues
This week you will receive your attendance dues statement from the Archdiocese. Just a reminder that the $50 donation is just that. It is a donation and therefore you do not have to pay it if you don't wish to.

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 4: 04 September
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning

In one of our maths sessions last week we used CUBEEZ for problem solving and counting. Ms Parsons was given a bag of cubeez cards ( kindly collected by friends and family) and there was great excitement when the Room 1 children saw " a whole lot" of cards. We wondered how many there were? We thought of ways we could work that out.
First of course, was the fun of ripping open the packets and making up the cubeez! Each child was given a handful of cards to make up. There was lots of discussion about "same and different" and comparisons made about " more and less".

Then there was the great tidy up!

After that each child counted their collection of cubeez and we recorded our equation. It was tricky to add up that way so we re-grouped our cubeez into 10s and then counted.

Finally, we stacked and packed some of them into a container and practised our estimating skills by making a guess as to how many there were!

As Friday was Daffodil Day - Room 1 had some crafting fun making daffodil flowers with Ms Williams.
Room 2 Learning
In maths, Room 2 have been learning about perimetre and area. The class have been exploring how to measure around the edges of shapes (perimetre) as well as working out the space inside them (area). As part of our area learning, we discovered what a square metre is and used sticky notes to help us understand and visualise this concept. The class also enjoyed finding real-life examples from around the classroom and playground to put their learning into practice.
For PE, we have made a start on our athletics programme. The class are learning some good coordination skills and are having to work in teams to practise their relay skills.

Room 4 Learning
Fossil Fuels: Oil Spill Clean Up activity
Last Wednesday, our science session focused on testing and observing the effectiveness of four sorbent materials. The children worked in pairs and created oil slick formations in trays to test the sorbent materials. The first step was to measure 10mls of crude oil (cooking oil) and pour it into a corner of a plastic tray. Next Sample A was poured onto the ‘oil slick’ and the children observed how well it soaked up the oil. After this, they created another ‘oil slick’ created in the opposite corner of the tray and tested Sample B.
In another tray two more ‘oil slicks’ were created to test Samples C and D for their effectiveness to soak up the oil. After the children had observed the four samples, it was time to select the most effective sorbent material and explain why they believed it was the best at cleaning up the ‘oil slick’.
The four samples were:
Sample A - Mineral Sponge:
an organic substance made from Zeolite which is a naturally occurring volcanic material.
Sample B - UltraZorb:
an absorbent fibre that is made from %100 natural peat moss harvested and dried in New Zealand.
Sample C - Spillfix:
an organic substance made from %100 renewable Coir peat.
Sample D - Absorbent Pad:
a synthetic substance made from polypropylene pads specially treated to repel water but absorb hydrocarbons.
