Term 3 Week 5
Principal's Message

City Trip
The weather tried its best to dampen our spirits but it didn't work. Despite the rain we had a fabulous trip into the city on Friday. Our sessions at the Wellington Museum were very informative and the educators were very impressed by the children giving the fereedback:
"Your students were absolutely gorgeous! They were sweet, respectful and shared lots of really great whakaaro."
Our Year 7 and 8s showed some great driving skills on the crocodile bikes and our Year 5 and 6s did a great job finding historcal sites around the waterfront.
Thank you to Veronica, Alice, Sharyn, Nik, Rumi and Deborah for helping out on the day.
Lisa

School Photo Orders
You should have recently received an email (please also check your spam/junk box) directly from photolife, with your child/rens ‘shoot key’ code and instructions on how to view and order your child’s school photos on line.
All orders placed before Midnight this Sunday 17 August will be delivered free to school. (Orders placed after this date will be delivered to your home address and will incur a postage fee.)
Please see Katrina in the office or email office@stbernards.school.nz if you did not receive an email, and I can source your child’s key code for you.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 1: 14 August
Room 2: 21 August
Room 4: 04 September
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
Room 1 had an exciting time getting up close and inside!!! the St John Ambulance when it visited last week. We saw all the equipment they carry to help people, the button that makes the siren go ( Naol got to press it!) the stretcher with long legs and the walkie talkie radio. The children learnt how the ambulance service helps people and that the people who work in ambulances are called “paramedics”.

Room 2 Learning
Last week, Room 2 had a fantastic trip to the Wellington Museum. We learnt about the pūrākau (legend) of the two taniwha by becoming the storytellers ourselves — using puppets to bring the tale to life. The tamariki had a wonderful time acting out how the taniwha swam, splashed, and shaped the harbour. After our time at the museum, we headed to Te Papa, where we explored more fascinating exhibits and deepened our understanding of Aotearoa’s history and culture. It was a day full of creativity, learning, and discovery!

Room 4 Learning
Wellington Free Ambulance
Last Tuesday, Nick Swan, the Wellington Community Liaison from Wellington Free Ambulance visited St Bernard’s School. After morning break Room 4 went to the hall for their class session with Nick. He showed the children some important safety information slides about the services provided by Wellington Free Ambulance. Next he introduced Room 4 to the safety code of DRS ABCDS. The code is a series of steps to follow if you find someone lying on the ground who is unresponsive:
D - check the area for dangers - are you safe?
R - check for a response - can you wake them?
S - send for help - call 111 immediately
A - tilt their head to open the airway
B - check for breathing - look listen and feel
C - start CPR chest compressions only
D - use a defibrillator if there is one available
Nick demonstrated how to use a defibrillator in an emergency situation. Next it was time to practice CPR on two dummies. Room 4 split into two teams and each had a dummy to practice CPR on. For the last part of the session the children went outside to look in the ambulance. Nick also gave the siren a blast and flashed the emergency lights. The siren was loud! It was great to have Nick visit and teach the children about the Wellington Free Ambulance service and what Room 4 can do to help in an emergency situation.
Public Notices
Glasses and Soccer Shoes for Cambodia
Alice’s mum, Suzanne, is going back to Cambodia soon and would love to take spectacles and good quality soccer/football shoes with her. She would like to collect these by 26th August.
Spectacles
Nurse Makara runs an eye clinic for the poor and elderly in his village from his clinic. The older people especially look forward to me coming with these. I love their faces when they find a pair of glasses and they can actually see. They have no money for eye tests or glasses. All types of glasses needed - prescription, reading and sunglasses. If possible, can the glasses come with their cases? They have a rough life over there. If you have cases only, we would appreciate donations of those as sometimes we receive glasses only.
Teen/Adult Football boots - European Sizes 39-45 (US sizes 7-11)
Makara has a little shop at clinic where he sells restored second-hand football boots to the guys in the village to make a few extra dollars. They often play in bare feet. He also coaches a youth team and plays in one. I would love donations of good quality second-hand football boots in European sizes 39-45 (US sizes 7-11)
Please give these to Katrina at the office or to Alice.
