Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Message

Trip
On Friday 8th August we will be heading into the city. The children will all have a facilitator led session in the Wellington museum. We are also planning some other activities around the waterfront. The activities we can take part in are somewhat dependent on how many adults we have. If you are availabe to join us that day please let me know. We would need you to meet us at the Museum at 10.15am until we head back to school at 2pm.
Birthday
Thank you to Abe's family for providing pizza lunch and treats for his birthday last Monday. It was lovely to celebrate together. A highlight was watching the tradition whereby Abe and his family fed each other parts of his birthday cake.
Fikadu Family
I had a message this morning from Rutha, Sammy and Bisis' mum. They start their new school in Auckland today. Rutha says they are excited but miss St Bernard's a lot.

Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.

Birthday Wishes

Special birthday wishes to Olivia & Pisila. Olivia turns 6 on Thursday and Pisila will turn 11 on Saturday. We hope you both have wonderful, fun filled birthdays.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
Room 1 enjoyed exploring the Nano-Chem science kit with Mrs Harper. The first activity was making slime and learning to describe it - what it feels like, looks like and how it behaves.
The children had to follow directions, measure and mix ingredients, and then play with the slime and discover what it could do.
Here are some comments ....
" It was sticky. I squeezed the slime and it felt weird" Olivia
" I put the slime on the table. It fell out. It was sticky and slippery. The colour was blue" Ishaan
" Yesterday we made slime in the hall and it was stretchy and slimey" Naol
" I made slime with borax. The slime is blue. I put the slime in the fridge" Van Lian

Room 4 Learning
Nano Chem activity - Glow In The Dark Worms
Last Wednesday, Room 4 made glow in the dark worms using a mixture of glow powder, ‘worm goo,' and a substance known as worm activator. The children worked in pairs measuring 100mls of worm activator solution to put into a beaker before adding the worm goo mixed with glow powder. The mixture reacted with the worm activator (calcium) solution to create long, thin, bumpy worm shapes. The children took some of their worms out of the beakers and tested their strength and flexibility to see how far they could stretch. They also found a dark space to observe their solutions glow. It was a lot of fun and the children really enjoyed seeing their worm mixtures glow in the dark!
