Term 2 Week 8
Principal's Message

Office
Katrina is on leave until Wednesday 25th June and so I will be checking her emails. Feel free to email straight through to me.
Cross-country
Well done to Joan, Quinn and Joseph who competed in the Interzone Cross-country last week. I was so impressed with their determination and ability to stay on their feet. I am also glad I had my wellies on (gumboots) because the fields were extremely muddy.
Celebration of Learning
Please join us next Thursday at 2pm in the hall when the children will share all their learning from the term. Each class will have a chance to share classroom programmes and also what they have been doing in their music sessions with Mrs Harper this term. Room 4 will share their guitar pieces and our Year 8s will share what they have been doing in their intermediate programme time with our music teacher Emily. After that you will be able to pop into your child's classroom.

Celebration of Learning

Next Thursday, June 26, at 2pm in the hall we are holding our Celebration of Learning. Each class will share what they have learnt during the term. We will then head back to classes for you to have some one on one time with your children.
Anyone is welcome to join us- mums, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, au pairs, etc.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Birthday Wishes

Special birthday wishes to Amelia who turns 8 tomorrow. We hope you have a wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Room 1 Learning
It's all about Books Books Books in Room 1 at the moment. We are REALLY into reading. We read to ourselves, we read to each other, to the toys in the class and to Ms Parsons. We are reading SO much and earning ourselves reading awards!! We have been enjoying The Lighthouse Keeper series by Rhonda and David Armitage. It's inspired us to learn about lighthouses and even create our own! (we are keeping it a surprise for Celebration of Learning). We have been talking about the characters in the books we read, the setting of the story (where it is happening), the problem and how it gets solved. Look at us reading!

Room 2 Learning
This week in maths, Room 2 has been exploring fractions in a creative and colourful way! The class have been combining their learning with art by designing their own fraction art pieces. From symmetrical shapes to carefully divided patterns, each artwork reflects their understanding of fractions – using halves, thirds, quarters, eighths, tenths, etc.
It’s been wonderful to see Room 2’s mathematical thinking come to life through creativity. Not only are we developing our knowledge of fractions, but we’re also showing great focus, imagination, and pride in our artwork. We can’t wait to display these beautiful pieces in our classroom!

Room 4 Learning
More Space Facts
Last week, Room 4 continued to work hard on their Space research, with lots of children completing their slides. They have been very creative in their presentations with lots of images, diagrams and fact boxes. Here are some more facts about space:
Quinn: Stars
A star’s life starts in a large cloud of gas and dust called a molecular cloud. molecular clouds can range from 1,000 to 10 million times the mass of the Sun and can have a lifespan hundreds of light-years long.
Abe: Venus
Venus is the second planet closest to the sun. It is the closest in size to Earth and sometimes called our ‘twin’. Venus is the brightest planet when viewed from Earth. Venus rotates very slowly, taking 243 Earth days to complete one rotation on its axis. This is the longest day of any planet in our solar system. Venus has no moons or rings.
Erin: Dwarf Planets
There are five recognised dwarf planets: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea. Pluto is just one of many icy objects in a distant area of our solar system. Pluto has five moons and is only half the width of the USA. Ceres was the "missing" planet between Mars and Jupiter. One day on Eris is only a bit longer than Earth. Eris even has a moon, which is kind of cool. Makemake is named after a creator god in Easter Island mythology. It takes Makemake over 305 Earth years to finish one trip around the Sun. It's shaped like a football and takes about four hours to complete a full rotation, which makes its "day" super short.
Riley: Earth
Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only known planet in the solar system that ‘habours’ life. Earth has land, water and oxygen for humans to be able to live and breathe. It is the fifth biggest planet in our solar system.
Kat: Neptune
Neptune is a very windy and cold planet. It is similar to Uranus but it has dark blue colours made by methane in its air. Neptune is the furthest planet in our solar system. It has fourteen moons and has six rings.
Dara: Jupiter
Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun and is the biggest planet in our solar system. Jupiter takes 4333 Earth days to orbit the sun. Jupiter’s average temperature is -110 degrees celsius. Jupiter’s colour is white, orange, brown and red. Jupiter has four main moons: their names are Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
