Term 2 Week 6
Principal's Message

New Schools
I have been talking to various schools in order to be able to help you make decisions for your children.
St Teresa's and Clifton Terrace are offering open days and they both have plenty of spaces available.
St Teresa's, Karori
Come and See St Teresa’s in Action!
We warmly invite you to visit our small Catholic school and see our learners and teachers at work.
At St Teresa’s, every child is known and valued. We offer small class sizes, a strong focus on the arts and music, and a calm, nurturing environment where children can thrive.
Come and experience the joy of learning, our creative classrooms, and the welcoming spirit of our school whānau. We’d love to show you what makes St Teresa’s special.
Holy Cross, Miramar
A lovely community feel with a great cultural mix. They have big grounds, lots of sports teams and run activities such as Garden to Table.
Clifton Terrace Model School
Choosing a school that is right for your child is so important, so offering an opportunity for everyone to come and see/feel/hear the community that we are might help them towards making a decision for next year. No obligations and and it's open to everyone. If anyone chose to enrol their child at CTMS, I would work closely with you and your teachers to ensure a smooth and successful transition. We could even look at arranging some visits for Term 4 later in the year to help build some connections and familiarity.
St Anthony's, Seatoun
A small school with year level classes the same as ours. Small but not under threat of closure. They have an open day this Thursday morning.
St Anne's, Newtown
Matt, the principal, has told me he will have a few spaces next year but these will be dependent on numbers on each year level. He would be happy to meet you and show you around the school. Contact him at principal@st-annes.school.nz . St Anne's are about to be given an enrolment scheme and so there will be criteria that needs to be followed. I would suggest this will mean that there will not be space for non-preference children.
St Francis de Sales
I spoke with Mary-Angela, the principal. She tells me that she has wonderful staff and their programmes are very rich. She has plenty of spaces for preference and non-preference children.
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Sacred Heart has a number of spaces available for next year. They have an enrolment criteria list that is used when there are more children applying that they have spaces for. The criteria is on their website.
St Patrick's, Kilbirnie
They have spaces available for next year for both preference and non-preference children. This is a nice little school. A good way to meet children who will transition to St Patrick's and St Catherine's Colleges.

Mobile Dental Clinic Visit
From this Wednesday June 4 until Friday Jun 6, the schools’ dental nurse will be onsite in their mobile van, for the childrens annual dental check ups.
If further treatment is required your child will be given a notice to bring home. Please ask your children about their visit and check to see if they have brought any information home.
Brooklyn Library Visits
This term we will resume our termly visits to Brooklyn Library. If your child wishes to borrow a book during the visit they need to bring their personal library card with them. We will return books on the next visit if they are brought back in time. Books not brought on the day of the visit will need to be returned by yourselves. If you would like to leave your child's card in the classroom between visits then teachers will find a safe place to keep them.
Room 2: 05 June
Room 4: 12 June
Birthday Wishes

Special birthday wishes to Wallace who turns 8 this Saturday. We hope you have a wonderful, fun filled birthday.
Absences
If your child is sick or unable to attend school for all or part of the day, please either send a notification via the school app (skool loop), email the school office on office@stbernards.school.nz or phone 3899377 by 9.00 a.m. so that your child's absence can be accounted for.
Children who are late need to report to the office in case they have been marked absent by the teacher who takes the roll first thing in the morning.
If an absence is planned for a special reason, a note or telephone call to the school in advance is appreciated. In cases of prolonged absence, e.g. a family trip, a written note is required.
Room 1 Learning
As part of our spelling programme for the past two weeks, Room 1 have been learning about blends - two sounds ( sometimes three ) that you say together quickly, for example pl, gr. bl, fr, sn, sm, sp, str. spr. We have been noticing these in our reading books also. On Thursday we worked with a buddy to complete a worksheet on blends. We had to take turns and help each other out. We worked really hard and were proud of our work!

Room 2 Learning
Room 2 has been doing some awesome work with fractions. Their learning has included equivalent fractions, fractions of a whole, and ordering fractions. Ka pai Room 2!

Room 4 Learning
Last week, Room 4 was busy completing our Marian Art. Marian Art is a style of art that portrays Mary, the mother of Jesus. It includes paintings, icons, statues, songs, prayers, and many other art forms that represent Mary. Mary is often shown holding the baby Jesus. Room 4 created their own Marian Art sketches first before working on their final copy. The children used paints, pastels, felts, coloured pencils, and collage elements to create their own Marian artwork. Our Marian artwork will soon be displayed and shared at our upcoming Celebration of Learning assembly at end of this term.
